When we look to marriages in the past, it is amazing what women were prepared to put up with in order to be good and faithful wives.

It's a theme which Edna Healey has returned to again and again with her biographies of women like Mary Livingstone, wife of the explorer and Emma Darwin who was married to Charles, the scientist.
In Jojo Moyes' new novel set in the 1950's, the heroine Joy falls in love and gets engaged within twenty four hours. In later life she looks back on a marriage which certainly tested her fortitude to the hilt.
