An image the new Airbus.
Airbus A380 Super Jumbo

In this week's programme...

Dogfight

This week In Business reports on the war in the air ... the battle of the plane-makers.

After one hundred years of flying, two huge firms dominate the commercial aircraft industry: Boeing of the United States, and the European 'upstart' Airbus (which now has half the global market).

The two plane makers are pinning their hopes on a radically different vision of future of flying: a great big Airbus superJumbo versus the fuel efficient, but smaller, point-to-point 7E7 from Boeing.

Airbus says its superJumbo is the way people want to fly: Boeing says the future is all about smaller planes flying point-to-point. Both companies can’t possibly win the huge orders they are hoping for.

Meanwhile, for good measure, Boeing and Airbus have also embarked on a legal dispute about subsidies. Both air giants are at odds about the huge government subsidies the other side gets.
