What is happening to the airline business? Certainly the last year has seen the main carriers in deep trouble: after September 11th many US airlines were only saved from bankruptcy by being bailed out with massive amounts of cash from the US government.
British Airways too has seen its share price decline so sharply that this month it dropped out of the FTSE 100 index of Britain's largest companies. Yet, at the same time as all this red ink has been splashing about on the balance sheets of the traditional airlines their low cost rivals have been expanding at a dramatic rate. Ryanair, easyJet, Buzz and the others have transformed the way we travel.
Are the low-cost no-frills carriers revolutionising the market - or are they merely in favour when business fliers are counting their pennies? Peter Day investigates.
