Union with Scotland
In 1707 the Act of Union with England and Scotland became law. James I had styled himself King of Great Britain but it had taken a full century for Great Britain to become a legal fact. It had been debated on and off since Queen Anne's accession. England was now prepared to show some financial generosity to the Scots and they in turn were willing to accept the Hanoverian succession.
The English and Scottish Parliaments joined together thus ensuring that their choice of monarch would be the same and their decisions in foreign policy would not conflict.

- Remembered for his writing which he began as a pamphleteer
- Imprisoned for libel when he wrote Shortest Way With Dissenters in 1702
- Harley helped to get him out of prison and Defoe was his chief agent in Scotland during the Union crisis
- Edited Whig and Tory news sheets and in 1719 published The Life And Surprising Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe
- Moll Flanders followed in 1722, Journal Of The Plague Year in 1723
- His Tour Of The Whole Island Of Great Britain (1724-1727) is still used as a source, albeit an eccentric one, by social historians
Anyone born in Scotland after James I came to the throne was also English - a full English citizen.
THE ACT OF UNION 1707
There was to be but one Parliament, known as the Parliament of Great Britain, in which the Scots were to be represented by forty five members and sixteen peers. The Scots would keep their own legal system, including the feudal private law courts. The Scots would have the freedom to trade on equal terms with England and the colonies. The Anglican Church and the Presbyterian Church of Scotland united. The first Parliament of Great Britain met at Westminster on 23 October 1707.
