The Battle of Stamford Bridge
Harold's half brother Tostig and king Harold Hardrada of Norway invaded the north of Britain. Harold II of England raced to York and a battle was fought at Stamford Bridge which Harold won.
Meanwhile William of Normandy had landed in the south so Harold immediately marched south and fought another battle at Hastings only twelve days after the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
Harold's army was depleted and he did not wait for reinforcements. On Wednesday 14th October he led his men into battle and was defeated by William of Normandy who became William I of England.

HAROLD II (1020-66)- The last Anglo-Saxon king of the English
- The second son of Godwine, Earl of Wessex
- In 1044 he was made Earl of East Anglia and on his father's death also Earl of Wessex and therefore the most powerful man in England after Edward the Confessor
- Edward chose Harold as his heir and he was crowned on 6th January 1066
- On 25th September Harold defeated Harold of Hardrada King of Norway, and his own brother Tostig at Stamford Bridge, only to be defeated by William the Conqueror at Hastings on 14th October
The Battle of Hastings was fought not at the seaside but at Senlac Hill.
