Order of the Garter
Order of the Garter
Crecy, Calais and the Garter
Edward had to find money to fund his invasion of France. He set up Staple Ports and demanded that all wool exports be made via these ports.

In 1346 he and his son, Edward, aged 16, invaded France hoping to sack Paris. They reached the city walls but were driven back to Crecy where they fought an horrific battle. Edward was victorious and this led to the colonisation of Calais.

On his return to England, Edward set up the Order of the Knights of the Garter in 1348-1349

did you know?
Honi soit qui mal y pense is the motto of the Knights of the Garter. It means shame on him who thinks evil of it.

Edward was called the Black Prince because he wore black armour.

A DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST MEETING OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROYAL GARTER
All were clad in gowns of russet sprinkled with blue garters, wearing the like garters on their right legs, and wearing mantels of blue with escutcheons of St George. In this sort of apparel and bare-headed they devoutly heard mass celebrated by the archbishop of Canterbury, and the bishops of Winchester and Exeter, and afterwards sat in orderly array at a common table, in honour of the holy martyr, to whom they specially dedicated their noble fraternity, calling their company that of St George of the Garter.
