The Warsaw Pact & the Departure of Churchill
In 1955 Churchill retired and Eden became Prime Minister. Eden called a General Election and the Conservatives were returned with a healthy majority.

Hugh Gaitskell took over from Clement Attlee as leader of the Labour Party.

The Warsaw Pact was signed. This was a political and military agreement set up to counter NATO, especially after West Germany's inclusion in NATO. The Soviet Union feared Germany more than the US.

Princess Margaret put her faith and her country before her heart and did not marry the man she loved, Group Captain Peter Townsend.

Sir Anthony Eden (1897-1977)

  • Sir Anthony Eden was the son of an Irish aristocrat.
  • He studied Oriental languages at Oxford.
  • He became MP for Warwick and Leamington in 1923.
  • He was always most interested in foreign affairs becoming Foreign Secretary in 1935.
  • He resigned over Abyssinia in 1938.
  • He then became Secretary for the Dominions in 1939 and Secretary for War in 1940.
  • He returned to be Foreign Secretary during the Second World War and worked closely with Churchill.
  • He then became Churchill's second in command and could not wait for him to retire.
  • He finally replaced Churchill as Prime Minister in 1955 but was forced to resign over the controversial Suez Crisis in 1957.
