The Abortion Car Journey

We hear the conversations as women drive other women to abortion clinics in Houston, Texas.

Texas has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the USA; though American law guarantees the right to abortion, local lawmakers are often deeply opposed to the procedure and work hard to make abortion harder to access. The result in Texas is that the remaining clinics are spread thin across the state, meaning they can be very hard to reach for women – especially ones from low income or rural communities.

The controversy of the procedure means that women often can’t ask family members or friends to drive them to clinics, and many simply can’t afford a taxi.

One group aiming to mitigate this problem calls itself the Clinic Access Support Network; their solution is simple – they volunteer to drive women to their appointments at abortion clinics. We hear their conversations during these unique car journeys.
