World’s deadliest bird hatches in the Cotswolds

A southern cassowary, one of the world’s largest and deadliest birds, has been successfully hatched for the first time at a bird park in the Cotswolds.

Keepers at Birdland in Gloucestershire have been trying to breed the giant, flightless birds for more than 25 years.

The cassowary is related to the emu and is considered very dangerous because of its powerful legs, sharp claws and aggressive behaviour.

Head keeper Alistair Keen says the bird has been described as a “terror turkey” with a “six-inch steak knife on each middle toe”.

But he added: “Ours are really docile, they arrived as youngsters.”

The park has now agreed to let 5 Live listeners choose a name for the chick.
