The cost of covering the Iraq war

The invasion of Iraq 20 years ago had a profound impact on those who experienced it. It was - in many respects - a war that was beamed around the world through the media too.

But what was the effect it had on those who were sent there by outlets to report on it and on those who helped those correspondents with their work?

The US journalist Lulu Garcia Navarro, reported for years from Iraq for the US outlet National Public Radio. She now hosts First Person, a weekly podcast from the NY Times. This week's edition focused on the cost of covering the Iraq war and it featured Ali Hamdani, her Iraqi translator-turned-friend.

Weekend's Julian Worricker spoke to both of them about their experiences.
