Female Genital Mutilation in the Gambia is illegal. However, the cultural practise has been somewhat a thorn in the flesh as many women have refused to abandon the harmful practice. A programme dubbed dropping the knife, started by the former vice president Dr. Isatou Touray is now flourishing through the rural regions to have the cutters drop their tools and help sensitize on the effects of FGM. Halimatou Ceesay, an FGM survivor takes us through this story.
