Something New: Raymond Antrobus reads Honour

Honour

Honour
I thought
to boil

it down,
to lava it

but there wasn’t
enough silver

sparkling
on the medal

to mould
the impossibly

brilliant plaque
for my father’s

unglamorous
grave.

*
Before the acceptance, my father
spoke in a dream, said say yes

but don’t take it so serious.
He laughed like a fire

full of pips at the thought
of his son’s royal remaking.

*

Dad, I still fret
this thing

and the scores
of quotations

as what
empire is now

after all
it has burned.
