Dozens of protesters in Iran have been killed since unrest began last month following the death of a young woman in police custody.

Mahsa Amini was detained in Tehran by the country's morality police for allegedly not covering her hair properly, but died three days later while in custody.

Her death has sparked outrage, and protests continue to spread with demonstrations taking place across the country.

People are being arrested by authorities for protesting, and internet shutdowns are also occurring.

Iranian-American actress Shohreh Aghdashloo has recently taken to social media to draw attention to the situation. Shohreh left Iran during the Iranian revolution in 1979.

Speaking to Newsday's Parisa Qurban, she reacts to protests occurring in the country, and also reflects on what it was like for her to leave her country several years ago.

She says, "This generation wants the same life as other generations in other countries... they are asking, either leave me alone, or kill me... and that's a very strong, bold message. That's what breaks my heart."
