Jake Wightman - World Champion

Jake and his commentator Dad, Geoff, talk to 5Live Breakfast presenter, Rick Edwards, about his stunning 1500m win at the World Championships in Oregon.

It's a rare achievement to win the 1500 metres at the World Championships, but imagine doing it when your father is responsible for the stadium commentary. That's what happened to Britain's Jake Wightman. As the 28-year-old crossed the finish line ahead of Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in Oregon, footage showed his Dad, Geoff, in the commentary box holding back his feelings just long enough to share the result before falling back into his chair and sinking his head into his arms.

For 5 Minutes On, Jake and Geoff talk to ±«Óãtv Radio 5 Live Breakfast presenter, Rick Edwards, about how it felt for them. "I still need to pinch myself to realise this has happened", says Jake. For Geoff, there's been plenty of practice, "Go back 10 or 15 years and I was commentating on his school sports day. The crowds have got bigger, the stadiums have got bigger... but I still have to hold it together. It was only afterwards that I started to feel emotional about it".
