William the Conqueror

Rattus gets William to share his step-by-step guide to conquering Saxon England!

The writers and cast behind Horrible Histories wonder what it might be like if William the Conqueror had his own podcast. It is set some time after the Battle of Hastings, during the construction of the Tower of London

William wants to do his step-by-step guide to conquering but is gently heckled by his wife, Queen Matilda, who wonders if he is being too harsh on his Saxon subjects. She even puts through a call from Edith, King Harold’s sister, whose family William has decimated.

There is a mock advert for wool. There is also a quiz question about how many castles William built during his reign.

William leaves in a huff so Matilda chats with his brother, Bishop Odo about her marriage to William and the Bayeux Tapestry. A furious William returns, having discovered that Odo has been trying to conquer Italy without permission and Matilda has been secretly sending money to their disgraced son, Robert Curthose. William is delighted to reveal that he has commissioned the Doomsday Book.

Rattus offers some context at the top and tail of the episode, which also features two songs from the TV series – Norman Style and I’m Out of Town (sung by Alfred the Great).

The minipod that goes with this episode features a deleted scene in which actors Harrie Hayes and Richard David-Caine improvise in character about what Odo could call himself because he also wants a cool nickname, like ‘The Conqueror’.
