Get to know South East London singer-songwriter Poppy Ajudha.

A singer-songwriter hailing from South East London, Poppy Ajudha is no stranger to the spotlight with her soulful tone and jazz-inflected melodies. Making soul/RnB/alternative sounds, Poppy has already amassed more than 15 million streams, released two critically acclaimed EP’s – 'FEMME' and 'Patience', been named Soul Act of the Year at the JazzFM Awards and landed herself a spot on Barack Obama’s playlist.

Growing up, Poppy was always surrounded by music, with early influences ranging from reggae and soul, to rare grooves and jazz. Her father owned Paradise nightclub in New Cross, which was frequented by legends of the scene including Jools Holland and proved a big inspiration in her decision to pursue a career in music.

Having written her first song at the age of 7, Poppy's music tends to focus on social movements, predominantly issues surrounding sexuality, racial identity and gender, making her lyrical content as evocative and affecting as her vocal performance. Wowing with singles such as ‘Strong Womxn’, ‘Black Joy. Black Peace. Black Justice’ and her recent cover of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Watermelon Man’ for Bluenote Re:Imagined, Poppy's debut album is one of our most hotly anticipated releases of the year - if her track record to date is anything to go by, it will be a 2021 standout.
