UK athletics' long-term future has "one of its biggest opportunities" due to the rejigged event calendar, according to British 200m world champion Dina Asher-Smith.

The global coronavirus pandemic has seen both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2021 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon shifted back a year. There will now be global athletics competition each year to 2024: the World Championships will be held again in Budapest in 2023, followed by the Paris Olympics a year later.

Speaking to Eddie Hearn on the No Passion No Point podcast from ±«Óătv Radio 5 live, Asher-Smith - who won 200m gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha - said: “In terms of athletics being at the forefront of everybody’s mind, we’ve never had a period where we’ve had four global events back to back - big, exciting global events.”

“So, in terms of the long term future of athletics I actually - weirdly enough - think as a sport it has one of the biggest opportunities simple because of the reshuffle,” she added.
