With its large choral and orchestral forces, and emotional and romantic choruses and arias, Verdi’s 'Requiem' sounds more like one of his operas than a requiem. Its most famous section, the supercharged 'Dies Irae', with its scurrying strings and thunderous timpani strikes, has been used for dramatic effect in many films and adverts.
