Composed during the final years of World War 2, 'Metamorphosen' was first performed in 1946, three years before Strauss died. It was never made clear by the composer what the work was about but it's thought that Strauss' mourning of war-time events (especially the bombing of Munich) had inspired him. The way the coda echoes the Funeral March from Beethoven's 'Eroica' seems to support the idea that 'Metamorphosen' is an elegy to those dark times.
