AE Houseman’s 'A Shropshire Lad; was a rich source of inspiration for many composers, not least Ralph Vaughan Williams who in 1909 set 6 of the 63 poems to music. It is a remarkable achievement, with the German and French influences of his teachers Max Bruch and Maurice Ravel married with an English style owing much to the folksongs Vaughan Williams was collecting at that time.
