The R眉ckert Lieder do not represent a unified cycle, but were individually conceived and may be performed in any order. Each one of these ethereal songs uses completely different musical material, orchestral scoring, and structure. One of the songs, Liebst du um Sch枚nheit, was written as a gift to Mahler's wife after an argument and he hid the manuscript in her score of Wagner鈥檚 Die Walk眉re, which she often played through for pleasure. Being such a private expression of his love, Liebst du um Sch枚nheit is the only song from the R眉ckert-Lieder which Mahler did not later orchestrate.
