In the 1950s, Britain was dominated by a political and financial establishment that looked down on the stock market. But suburban accountant Jim Slater used the hitherto dormant power of the shareholders to rouse the market. Politicians were told that prosperity was being created through business but, in reality, Slater and those who copied him were stripping industry of assets and feeding them back into the market.
