Tick-tock: the winter song of a robin

It's a winter dawn in Holystone North wood, Northumberland, and legendary sound recordist Chris Watson captures a robin calling its distinctive tick-tock through the trees. It has been raining during the night and drops are percolating down through the oak wood canopy and branches. Listen out for tawny owls calling at the end of their night shift, and the gradual change to the sounds of the waking day: the ' tick, tick' of robin alarms and their winter song, carrion crows leaving their roost, the calls of a distant nuthatch and the long-tailed and blue tits. It's a special, slowly-developing ambient winter chorus.

Thanks also to Chris for the picture of his microphone in the dawn depths of the wood.
