2018 is the 50th anniversary of a historic salute at the 1968 Olympic Games. The man behind it was gold medal winner Tommie Smith who excelled at sprinting. Along with John Carlos and backed by Australian Peter Norman all of them stood on the podium at the 1968 Games in Mexico City and raised black-gloved fists during the playing of the US national anthem. The gesture inspired millions of black people in America who were protesting about racial inequality at the time. The men were suspended from the U.S. team, but have never apologised for their action.
