A Disco Tribute To Graeme Cartwright

Antony Daly calls us from 586 Records in Newcastle, with a playlist that includes A Certain Ratio, in tribute to a "glorious, kind and loyal soul" Graeme Cartwright.

Today’s castaway Antony Daly calls us from 586 Records in Newcastle, keeping his customers at bay until he’s chatted to Lauren.

Antony wanted to share some excellent tunes and pay tribute to Graeme Cartwright, a charismatic figure from Newcastle’s music scene and a “true, glorious, kind and loyal soul” whose wake is to be held at The Cluny today.

A mutual friend, Michaela Johnson, tells us more: “I met Graeme at The Palace at The Riverside some 20+ years ago. He DJ’d along with Matt Moir and it had a profound effect on me. I had no idea just how much it would at the time but he’d regularly hark back to the days where “a little gobby lass used to bool on up to the DJ booth and start telling, not asking, TELLING, me what to play...annoying thing was, y’were aaaaalways bloody right though!”

We were there for each other, no matter what, and once I moved in a few streets down from him this could sometimes be lethal! Any gig, night, event or party would be greatly improved by his presence and after parties were often more extensive affairs.

We could sit and listen to music forever. We both love to be surprised and relished each other’s recommendations. Putting together the playlist for his celebration of life has not been hard at all. He lived and breathed music and many of our memories are centred around music.

He was keen to get me to meet everyone he knew and loved and given just how many people this was, I was out and about A LOT! He’d trot me about like a show pony saying ‘aaaaah Michela this is insert name you’ll LOVVVVVVVVVVVE them!’ He was never wrong and widened my friendship circle, introducing me to many great friends I’ll have for life.

He was one of the best people I’ve ever met. A warm, witty, super knowledgeable, kind, intelligent, loud, anarchic, hilarious, caring bag of bother. I’m so glad I badgered the living daylights out of him at The Palace and ended up partying with him because he’s brought so much to my life.

Cartwright Forever! X”
