As 6 Music shows its love for New York, Block9 (those dudes behind the NYC Downlow disco at Glastonbury) choose tunes from Billie Holiday, MC Lyte, Tuff Jam and more.

He says: "Well we heard you were doing a New York City special this weekend and thought we should send you a few favourites from the archives. The DJs who have been visiting us yearly at The NYC Downlow serve up a nice selection of classic NYC tracks, but those dancefloor-orientated selections are just a tiny fraction of the spectrum of musical flavours coming from the real city of New York.

Block9鈥檚 Music Department (that's Gid) have pulled together a broad selection of tunes including deep roots rarities from Bronx reggae legend Bull Wackies鈥� studio (Annette Brissett - He鈥檚 My God), Latin powerhouse Fania, with a little bit of ultra-rare Baptist church gospel thrown in for good measure.

The importance of New York as THE wellspring of music and culture for us over here at Block9 cannot be overstated. For me, Tuff Jam鈥檚 'I Got You' on London鈥檚 New York Soundclash label is of equal importance to say a top shelf Strictly Rhythm classic because it鈥檚 the NYC influence on the UK sound that is the juicy thing. When we - the UK - started taking the classic New York deep house sound and building upon it, riffing on it, and adding a bit of London 鈥渢uffness鈥�, that鈥檚 when the sparks started to fly.

Honey Dripper鈥檚 鈥業mpeach The President鈥� from 1972 is a classic New York track VERY close to our hearts over here at Block 9.
