Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee, however in the forests of central Uganda the Kasansa (Sansa) bean is spreading its roots. Grown in the shade of banana and fruit trees, Sansa is part of the Robusta family, with a bitter and rich taste that is perfect for Italian espressos. Previously eaten as a food, the arrival of British rule in the late 1800s rebranded the fruit through roasting and grinding to produce coffee.

Slow Food is now working with Sansa bean farmers to ensure they are aware of the true worth of their coffee. In Italy, a team of roasters are developing a blend to make the most out of the Sansa coffee, and encouraging people to think about how much they pay for their morning cup.
