European leaders discuss continent's future

Europe's leaders discuss the future at a shrine to one of Europe's founding fathers

Angela Merkel, Matteo Renzi and Francois Hollande are meeting on a small island off the coast of Naples to discuss the future of Europe almost two months after the UK's referendum vote to leave the E.U. The island of Ventetone has symbolic significance, as the prison home of a founding father of the European project, Altiero Spinelli, who dedicated much of his life from the Second World War onwards to unifying Europe's oft-warring nations. We hear from a British Eurosceptic author and journalist, as well as a Europhile Italian MEP who represents the Green party about the relevance of the venue choice. Turkey's economic reforms garnered few headlines during a weekend of violence, but they are still important to the country's voters as President Erdogan seeks to shore up his support after the recent failed coup. Donald Trump's allegations that U.S. economic data may be rigged is of a piece with much of his campaign rhetoric. And at Jackson Hole, celebrity central bankers from around the world may discuss some of the new tools they will need to employ if their respective arsenals of monetary policy techniques runs dry.
