Kasparov and the Machine

Man battles machine in the story of the chess master's controversial matches against IBM's Deep Blue computer. (2004)

Man battles machine in the story of the chess master's controversial matches against IBM's Deep Blue computer.

No one thought chess-playing computers would ever defeat the artful intuition of the best grandmasters. But in 1997, Garry Kasparov lost a six-game match to Deep Blue. This film follows Kasparov back to New York, the scene of his torment, and asks what went wrong. It concentrates on the infamous second game, when Deep Blue suddenly started playing cannily, sensitively, as no machine ever had. Had its programmers achieved the impossible? Kasparov is sceptical, to put it mildly. (2004)
