Going back 35 years to January 1981 when four leading Labour politicians announced they were breaking away from the party and setting up their own political party in protest at what they saw as the left-wing drift of Labour.

The so-called 'gang of four' were Shirley Williams, Roy Jenkins, William Rodgers and David Owen. Two months later the Social Democratic Party, or SDP, was formed under the leadership of Roy Jenkins and shot to the top of the opinion polls. But in the end the experiment failed and the party was folded into the Liberals.

This is a key political moment to remember but also one that could possibly have echoes in what's currently happening in Labour.
