Belfast: Tobacco for the Troops

Belfast had a number of tobacco factories which were among the largest employers in the city. Gallaher’s huge factory in York Street was at one time the biggest tobacco factory in the world.

At the bottom of Sandy Row lies the building of Murray, Sons and Company, a former tobacco factory, it now houses numerous other businesses and is called Murray’s Exchange.

Jonathan Bardon explores Belfast’s tobacco industry and how tobacco and cigarettes were essential for troops morale.
