Berlin's Tempelhof airport closed in 2008 and after seven years of argument about a future use for the site, and a referendum, the space was finally handed over to the local citizens for recreation in May.

The airport's old hangars are now used to host large exhibitions and pop concerts and the airfield itself is proving to be a perfect location for everything from kite skating to rollerblading.

The airport was a classic example of Nazi architecture and after World War Two was at the heart of the Berlin airlift where the Western powers flew in essential supplies during the Soviet blockade of West Berlin.
