'Our school children all run one mile a day'

A primary school in Stirling has created a scheme that's getting every one of its pupils to walk or run a mile every day, in an effort to improve their health.

On Friday, the chair of the Health Select Committee, Sarah Woolaston MP, said that primary school children should be weighed regularly in order to combat obesity.

The head teacher of St Ninian's Primary in Stirling, Elaine Wyllie, rang in to the Stephen Nolan show to explain how their pioneering scheme works.

She said that none of her pupils in Primary 1 are now overweight - and the chief inspector of schools recently praised the daily mile, saying that the children looked "apple-cheeked and bright-eyed", as they used to back in the 1950s.

A number of other schools are now looking at copying the scheme.
