North Road, Darlington: Accidents in the ‘Shell Shop’

Darlington women were manufacturing explosives in the town’s "shell shop". But recently discovered records, which were going to be thrown out; give an interesting insight into the dangers they faced.

One caught her hand while another shows the injuries she received when a heavy shell landed on her foot.

The site is now a supermarket. However, the clock from the original factory is still there. It takes pride of place at the front of the building. A reminder of the role young women played in Darlington and the dangers that they faced.

The paperwork shows they received compensation and wages while they were off on sick leave as a result of their injuries.
