Safety in the Skies

In the wake of the MH17 air disaster, a UN meeting asks whether airlines should be getting neutral security updates to decide where it is safe to fly. Would such a system work?

A meeting of the UN aviation authority, ICAO - the International Civil Aviation Organisation - today considers whether airlines should be getting neutral worldwide security information to decide when and where it is safe to fly. At the moment, airlines themselves are often being left to make these decisions, and many have begun re-routing to avoid conflict zones like Ukraine, Iraq and Israel. What are the cost implications for passengers? We hear from David Learmount of the aviation publisher, Flight Global, and from Dr Guy Gratton, Head of the Flight Safety Laboratory at Brunel University. Also in the programme, we hear a report on why Brazilian trade with Africa has increased six-fold in recent years, and the emotional desire to extend it further. And, in the internet age, our regular commentator, Jeremy Wagstaff of Reuters, reflects on the bits of the world that still lie outside of the Worldwide Web - is it time to hook up the world's oceans?
