A SMALL DESIRE
by PUSHPA VALLABH

A small desire dwells
in my small heart
like a lamplight
in a darkened room.

The desire to reach the skies
to touch the mountain peaks.
The longing for such a life
that death cannot vanquish
in my small heart.

To glide like clouds
to fly like birds
the wish to make an anklet of stars
and wear it on my feet.

The desire to be the one
whom waters can not sweep away
nor fire burn.
To be the one whom the sword can not injure
the bullet can not wound
whom death can not kill
I desire such a life
in my small heart.
