Jim and June met when Jim was doing his National Service. Jim was posted to Germany so much of their courting was done by letter and it wasn’t until they were married and settled with a family that they discovered their mutual interest in history. Today they are active members of their local history group and also, as ‘Blue Badge’ Tour Guides, proudly show visitors around Norwich city centre.
Their main shared passion is for a local non-denominational cemetery that June discovered on their doorstep when, as a young Mother, she took a short-cut back from the shops one day. Since then they have been involved in the battle to preserve and protect this historic place. Rosary Road Cemetery is Grade 2 listed and was the first of its kind in the country, dating back to 1819. It’s full of wildlife and wonderful stories behind the tombstones. Many of the great and good of Norwich are buried there - industrialists, artists and philanthropists, along with circus performers and train-drivers.
Jim and June share a love of learning and in their retirement, successfully studied for university degrees – June in History and Jim in German.
Today, they regularly share their enjoyment and enthusiasm for local history with visitors to the Rosary Road Cemetery. They have become authorities on the lives - and deaths - of those buried there.
Both June and Jim love this place so much that they have bought themselves their own final resting place in the corner of the cemetery. In this conversation they talk about their love of the cemetery and the plans they have for their plot.
