Putting something back: Colin and Liz

Colin and Liz are good friends. In this conversation they discuss their friendship of 30 years based on a mutual interest in helping others and wanting better things for people.

Over the 30 years since meeting at a club for people with special needs, where Colin was a member and Liz the Manager, a strong friendship has grown and each have supported the other in many ways. Right from the start, Colin was always keen to offer a helping hand to Liz starting, with the photocopying and eventually, with the additional support of other organisations like Adult Education, PHAB and his church, Colin went on to qualify as a part-time Youth Worker and a churchwarden.
Colin recalls how in the past he was sometimes made to feel less than human because of his disabilities but he believes Liz’s support, friendship and the fact that she always treated him like an able bodied person, took away his disability.
Liz has watched Colin blossom and attributes this to the fact that he was always up for a challenge and that he was prepared to push boundaries. Liz may have given him opportunities but he saw the opportunity and ran with it. Liz believes the success of their relationship today is based on lots of shared experiences and a shared passion for human rights – wanting better things for people.
Today they remain good friends who spend time together. Colin is now retired but still wanting to do things for others and “put something back” - he keeps busy helping out as a volunteer at the local hospital and is a life member of the National Guild of Vergers.
