Viking women and children

Viking women were quite independent and were allowed to choose their husband. 'Husband' is a Viking word, 'hus' means 'house' and 'band' the 'bond' or marriage between husband and wife. When they married, a Viking husband gave his wife a key to the house instead of a ring. Their children were allowed to play, but had to help at home and on the farm.
