From the Odyssey Book XII. Odysseus and his men approach the island of the Sirens, he instructs them to block their ears against the Siren song with beeswax. He chooses not to do this but requests that his men tie him to the mast so that he may listen to the Siren song as he passes their island. He simultaneously experiences great pleasure from their song and anguish that he may not join them. The music drives him to renounce everything that he holds dear, his lands, his family and even his own son. As the boat moves past the island, he becomes the only man to hear the Sirens' song and survive. Some of the crew question his reckless behaviour.
