The nature and origins of sand particles

An explanation of sand - its existence, composition and transportation along the coastline. Sand consists of small particles of weathered and eroded material which are transported by the wind and waves. The wind creates sand dunes and the waves are the cause of longshore drift. The size and colour of sand particles is determined by several factors such as location, tidal range and rock type.
