Jazz Variations on a Strip Cartoon

A selection of the best in jazz music.

Shelly Manne and his friends who made an LP months after the My Fair Lady jazz hit in 1956. This second one was based on the Broadway show Li'l Abner which in turn was the result of the daily strip cartoon which at one time had 40 million readers worldwide. It wasn't the success of the first LP but the sound is similar with Andre Previn and Leroy Vinegar. There's also an Ella comparison, two tunes sung by Ella Fitzgerald just eighteen months apart and yet such a difference in her voice and delivery.
