Romanian robbers to be sentenced for commuter crimes

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

A Romanian family who robbed nearly two hundred passengers on Kent's trains will be sentenced today.

The Rostas family used their Gravesend home as a base for their operation, which lasted for two and a half years, and netted them at least £60,000 (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

It employs nearly 1 in 10 people on the Romney Marsh, so when Dungeness A power station closes in five years time hundreds of jobs will be lost.

Now an action plan is being drawn up by Shepway Council to try to reduce the impact in the area - including promoting tourism and improving transport links (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).

Are you one of the 45,000 people in Kent waiting for a council house? If so you might take a claim this morning from Kent County Council that it is the most successful local authority in the country for getting empty homes back into use with a pinch of salt.

Since the council established its "No Use Empty" initiative back in 2005 more than 2,000 empty properties have been brought back into occupation. However, there are still 7,000 empty homes in the county (06:41, 07:39 and 08:48).
