John Elwyn

A look at the work of landscape painter John Elwyn who specialised in producing rural landscapes of south west Wales though he lived in England for a large part of his life. Kim Howells praises his work, assessing his landscapes as being among the most accurate landscapes of Wales despite him not living in Wales. Robert Meyrick, head of the Aberystwyth School of Art, remembers meeting him in Winchester. They analyse the content of two of his paintings - 'Aberarth' and ' Hymn Critics' the latter of which Howells describes as representing a more idealised view of Wales. Meyrick says that this reflects a memory of Wales from Elwyn's childhood in the 1920's. 'Windfalls' and 'Before the Meeting are shown with Meyrick commenting on Elwyn's use of colour.
