Great northern diver chicks are covered in down to keep them warm, and do not even try to dive underwater. Adult divers carry their chicks on their backs as they swim about. While one parent ferries them around, the other goes to catch food for them. A male catches and eats a fish underwater, then eventually returns with a crayfish for the chicks. It is broken into small pieces and fed to the chicks a bit at a time.
