Fair Fuel UK, which was founded in Folkestone by former haulier Peter Carroll, has secured the debate after getting 100,000 signatures on one of the government's own e-petitions. Today MPs will urge the government to scrap planned rises in fuel duty.

A £1m scheme to give council tenants in Ashford solar panels has been dropped after the government reduced the cash incentive. Ashford Borough Council had hoped its £1.2m investment in solar energy would recoup almost three times that through guaranteed tariffs paid for selling spare electricity to the National Grid for the next 25 years. However, a proposal to cut the value of the incentive by more than half, and bring it forward three months, has forced a rethink.
