Mel Powell tribute

Late night big band, jazz and irresistible sounds.

A note from Paul...

"This week the Late Paul Barnes pays tribute to one of the finest and most original swing pianists: Mel Powell. He was in the Benny Goodman orchestra, and as Sergeant Powell he lent his brilliance to Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Orchestra. The programme also bows the knee to the undefeated champion of Harlem big band drummers, Chick Webb, the man who discovered and encouraged the young Ella Fitzgerald.

The Late Paul Barnes, possibly the worst music programme on the wireless, but striving weekly to improve. 11.00 on Saturday night.

Pip, pip, hooray."
