On Rannoch Moor in the Highlands, some refugees from the last ice age can still be found. The ptarmigan, for example, lives on the highest mountains in Scotland, its white winter plumage a reminder of its Arctic roots. Arctic hares also live here, their shorter ears and longer coat helping to keep them warm.
