Red kite carers

Some of the original oak forest of Wales still exists on the sides of some isolated valleys. This is red kite country. A single chick that hatched in early May is now almost fully grown, and both adults are kept busy hunting for food. Red kites mainly eat carrion but they will also take insects, small birds and small mammals, and forage for frogs and snails. Their varied diet is one of the reasons they've been so successful in these hills. Red kites have a fledging period of almost seven weeks - this is one of the longest of almost any British bird.
