The Antarctic winter has winds of 120mph and temperatures as low as minus 70 Celsius. David Attenborough travelled to the ice sheet to see how specially adapted animals - such as the Weddell seal - can survive when most other widlife retreats north. Weddell seals are the only mammals that stay in Antarctica all year round using their thick layer of insulating blubber to keep warm and keeping breathing holes open under the ice. Aerial shots show a group of seals clustered round such a hole in the ice. Underwater footage captured the eerily lit waters below the sea ice and the seals swimming in it. The seawater is warmer than the air above, and never falls below -1.9 Celsius, so the seals retreat here during winter storms.
